Safety of 222 nm UVC irradiation to the surgical site in a rabbit model

As a result, in the tissues collected 1 hour after UV irradiation, many CPDs (markers of UV-induced DNA damage) were found in each tissue in the 254 nm irradiation group, but in the 222 nm irradiation group, only adipose tissue was not irradiated. Although it increased with respect to the group, there was no significant difference from the non-irradiated group in other tissues. In adipose tissue, the CPD positive rate after 24 hours of UV irradiation was also compared, but the positive rate was significantly higher in the 254 nm irradiation group than in the other two groups, and it was significant between the 222 nm irradiation group and the non-irradiation group. There was no difference.

This result suggests that 222 nm UVC irradiation may be a safe and new way to prevent surgical site infections.

Ultraviolet rays (UV-C) are highly bactericidal, but have been found to have adverse effects on cells including the skin. However, UV light with a wavelength of 222 nm is considered safe because it only reaches the stratum corneum when it irradiates the skin.
